S.J. Smith - Carrying the legacy forward
As of Nov. 1, 2025, the company’s 75th anniversary, the third generation of S.J. Smith had been at the helm of the company for several years. Today, Richelle Smith-Brecht is the President and CEO, Christopher Smith is Director of Procurement, and Eric Smith is the Vice President of Operations.
John Hanlon was president of S.J. Smith from 1995 to 2011, working closely with CEO Richard Smith. “The primary goal was always the succession plan for the next generation,” Hanlon said. “I’m very impressed with the work the next generation is doing. They have a solid team with Richelle, Robin, Eric, Christopher, Rich, the whole team.”
Mike Mitchell, former vice president of sales, who retired in 2023, said he was impressed at how Rich Smith handled succession. “One thing I always gave Rich credit for, is any of his kids who wanted to join the company, they had to work for another company. He wanted them to get the full range of experience, so they understood the business from the ground up.”
“I’m really proud that all three of his children came into the business, and the way that we transitioned to third generation ownership happened,” Smith-Brecht says. “Everyone coming together is what kept it going. We’re still here 75 years later.”
“We are incredibly fortunate to have been entrusted with carrying forward the legacy our grandparents started, and our father strengthened over his 48 years,” says Christopher Smith. “At the heart of that legacy are our employees, both past and present. Their dedication to continually expand their knowledge, grow in their craft, and find better ways to serve our customers is what truly makes S.J. Smith who we are.”
What started off as a small welding supply company in 1950, has become a dynamic, problem-solving organization that focuses on providing top-notch service to all our customers, large and small. S.J.
