Helium

Gas Symbol Helium 500p 011123

Helium, sourced from natural gas wells, is an inert (non-reactive) gas used primarily in cooling such as for the magnets in MRI scanners, satellite instruments, and more well-known installations such as the Large Hadron Collider and the Apollo space vehicles. Helium is used as an inert shielding gas for arc welding, as a carrier or purge gas for semiconductor processes, as a carrier gas in laser operations, and in calibration mixtures.

Helium is also used for arc welding, specifically mixed with Argon on thicker TIG welding of aluminum. It’s also commonly mixed with Argon for metal arc welding of stainless steel.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?

"I've been a customer at SJ Smith in Decatur for 10 years now, and every time I stop by, the guys there are so incredibly friendly and helpful. From refilling my oxy/propane mini tanks for metalsmithing work to swapping out my propane tank on my grill, they've always helped me with everything I've needed. When I first started out with a torch, one of the guys even helped me figure out how to disassemble and reassemble my torch and gauges to my tanks safely. Its always a pleasure to swing by."
